Crazy days

These past few days have been CRAZY, but in a mostly good way.

I did our taxes. Mine were relatively easy and simple, and my state offers free e-filing (SO awesome!). Boy's on the other hand, were slightly more complicated and took forrrrever. Oh and they weren't free to e-file, boo. Just another reason he should be an Oregonian, if you ask me. And now that my taxes are done, I'm applying for school again! We're both actually applying to the same school, and it's an amazing one, but no more about that because I don't want to jinx it :) We do have backups, but they're nothing that would blow your mind like this one.

I've been working hard on the blog party, guys, and it's going to r.o.c.k. Seriously, there are already 4 planned giveaways and some super cool DIYs.

I've never been a huge flowers girl, mostly because I think they're a pain to water all the time and they wilt so fast, but I really dig this tissue paper flower garland. I will admit though, that lately I have been daydreaming of a pretty, self-sustaining flower garden that I can clip fresh flowers from every week. Eventually.

Blog Party Info

I've been buying small pieces of favorite fabrics for a while. It started in 2006 when I started making button earrings, but now I buy it because someday I want to start some sewing projects. Granted, I'll need a sewing machine first, but I can still buy pretty fabric to use up someday!

Here are 3 of my favorites right now:

I have about a yard of the gray one on the bottom, but only an 1/8 of a year of the top two (boy do I wish that I had purchased more now!). Maybe the top two are still in stores.

Also, I know I've talked about it a lot lately, but:

I wanted to make a graphic, ha. I'm a dork. It actually doesn't really match what my new website will look like, I just did a project with the deer paper that I want to show you soon and liked the macro shot so I threw some words on it. Yep.

Yesterday I spent a few hours at the college with Boy. Got a little bit of work done on my blog, I think it's almost ready to launch!! It got pushed back a bit what with him in the hospital so much lately. Anyway, I'll have a giveaway on the new blog when it's launched, and possibly on my new Facebook page.

Boy update

Sorry for the radio silence on Boy since my last post. Not much news to share, but here are the updates so far:
1. He was released from the hospital.
2. They STILL don't know what's wrong with him, but they gave him pills to keep his heart rate down until they figure it out.
3. He has more tests at the hospital tomorrow.
4. I haven't slept much because I'm so worried. I try not to show my worry because I know it will stress him out. He needs to stay calm and upbeat.
5. We have watched a lot of shows and movies because he is pretty much bedridden for a while.
6. We got the bill for his first ER visit. Holy crap!!! And that was the quickest visit of the 4 - I'm scared to see the other ones. I just have to trust that we will be able to take care of it when the time comes and that it will all work out.
Please, please continue to send positive thoughts his way/pray for him ♥ We truly appreciate it, we have been so blessed to have wonderful friends {online and offline} who have shown love and support. We feel lucky to have all of you, so THANK YOU!!

In the hospital

Well friends, if you follow me on Twitter then you know that Boy went to the ER via ambulance about a week and a half ago. He was released after almost 7 hours in the ER with the diagnosis of hypersensitivity to caffeine and hyperventilation from that sensitivity. He had taken one of those energy pills and drank about half of an energy drink {he's been drinking energy drinks daily for YEARS}. Anyway, the doctor told him to wean himself off of caffeine to avoid caffeine withdrawals. Which he tried, drinking only two 4oz cups of coffee over the course of the next week.

Then on Friday we went to downtown Chicago. He ordered a single shot of espresso, not thinking that it would be too much caffeine. We walked to Millennium Park so I could say hello to the bean {my favorite Chicago site}. We got there, walked about half way around the bean to where you can view the ice skating rink below, and he started having the same symptoms as before. Fast heart rate, tightness in his chest, shakiness, hard to breathe, lightheaded, feeling like he was going to pass out while he was standing, etc. I had the park security call an ambulance, SO thankful that we were at a park that has an office and regular security!!! He was taken to the hospital, admitted at around 2:30pm. They ran blood tests, didn't know what was going on and called it caffeine hypersensitivity again. This time he had heart palpitations. They gave him two bags of fluid to try to flush his system and released him at almost 9pm, saying to just wait out his crazy symptoms and that they would get better by Sunday around 2pm. We didn't want to drive all the way back home {almost a 3 hour drive} that late, so we stayed at his sister's house. At 12 midnight he woke up, feeling even worse. I called an ambulance. When they got there they checked his bp {blood pressure} and heart rate before loading him into the ambulance. He was shaking harder than I've ever seen him shake, almost like someone with hypothermia. His heart rate was 143. Anything above 100 is considered fast, it should be between 60 and 85ish. I was told that 160 is usually when you go into cardiac arrest.

Blah blah. More blood tests, more saying it's just caffeine and wait out the symptoms. I hate to be a jerk and say that hospitals don't care as much about people without insurance, but..... {I'm self-employed and he's a full time student in a college that offers no medical coverage, wtf}. Anyway, we stay there until almost 6am. We haven't had sleep in days, and to tell the truth I was kinda pissy because I've had to see the man I love hooked up to machines in 3 different hospitals and nobody is helping in any major way. I know it's the ER and they are just there to stabilize him and can only do so much, but his sister is a nurse and said that they should definitely have admitted him to look for underlying causes. Duh. I wasn't rude to anyone, just relieved that they thought it should definitely go away. We decided to stay at his sisters place the entire weekend to make sure that he was okay before we attempted to drive home.

Sunday we get back. Rest the entire day. Nothing but bed rest and movies for him, with a little video game time mixed in. Monday rolls around, and he has classes from 8am to 4pm (Illinois celebrates Lincoln's birthday instead of President's Day I guess. It's weird to me, but whatevs). I'm worried about him, he's worried too {the symptoms were supposed to be gone by Sunday around noon, they were still there}. So I went with him to the school and set up my computer right outside his class. Not even 10 minutes go past and he has to leave the school. We go back home for another full day of rest, thinking that maybe the caffeine is still in his system.

Tuesday (today? Maybe yesterday by the time I post this). He doesn't have any classes on Tuesday, so we drive around town to look for one of those blood pressure machines in pharmacies. Seriously, can't find one anywhere. I think the WalMart in town has one, but by the time we got to the parking lot all the same symptoms are back. Not cool. Go back to the house, but we're only there for a few minutes before we realize that he really should get back to a hospital. Spend about 6 hours in the ER before they FINALLY say that they think he should be admitted so that they can run tests. YES!!!! That was a few hours ago. So many tests are ordered tomorrow, but for now it's all rest time for him. They had to give him a sedative and anti-anxiety pill to slow his heart rate enough so he could fall asleep. It's not the best rest in his life, he's been asleep for probably about an hour and he keeps waking up about every 5-10 minutes, looking around, and sometimes mumbling something incoherent before drifting off to sleep. Will he be embarrassed that I said that? Anyway, it's awful seeing him hooked up to machines and so nervous.

He has bruises on his arms from all the times he was poked to draw blood and insert an IV at all of the hospitals. He hates hospitals and refuses to even go when he breaks bones {he broke his wrist last month, didn't go to the doctor no matter how much I asked him to} so for him to say that he needs an ambulance is a BIG DEAL. I'm not even going to let myself stress over the insane bills from 3 ambulance rides, 4 times in the ER, and all the tests to come. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. For now I just want my boy healthy and happy. If you made it through this entire blog post, you're a trooper! Thank you so much. Please, please keep him in your prayers and send positive thoughts his way. We both REALLY appreciate it, it's the only thing currently getting us through the stress and worry of the situation.

Oh, and also - if you didn't know before how bad energy drinks can be for you, the nurses at every single hospital have said that they have seen otherwise healthy individuals in their 20's and 30's have strokes and heart attacks because of these energy supplements!! Even too much coffee can be like a chemical stress test to your heart. So, um, please be careful and stay away as much as possible! Order your yummy Starbucks coffee drinks in decaf if you can.

Nail Polish Love

Received my E.L.F. {eyes lips face} order in the mail late last week. I have a ton of new makeup goodies to show you soon, but for now just wanted to show you the new nail polish that I ordered from them. I only ordered one, just to see how I liked it because I'm kinda picky on nail polish.

I had already painted my nails rainbow polka dots when this came in, so I had to wait a couple days to even try it. The verdict? I loooooove it! It dried so fast and was really smooth going on. Unfortunately I ruined it by putting a purple design on top of it, and the purple nail polish wasn't even dry after like 45 minutes, so I tossed it and had to clean off my nails. I will definitely be ordering more of this polish in my next E.L.F. order, though. It was only $1 and was just as great as my Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear polish that I love.

Right now my nails are hot pink {far left in the above photo} because of Valentine's Day. And because I couldn't resist, a photo of my current collection.

See the purple NYC polish in the square bottle in the back? That is the one that didn't dry. I had to throw it away. Bleh.

Street Art Love

Way to be, Albuquerque!
I love street art SOOOO much. Artists like Banksy make my heart happy. So I'm thrilled that my former hometown {Albuquerque, New Mexico} is embracing street art downtown. I think that wheatpaste murals are awesome and a lot of graffiti is beautiful as well {if done right}.

Confession: I've ALWAYS wanted to participate in street art, but since it's considered vandalism and is illegal almost everywhere, there's no way I'm going to sneak around at night in black clothes with spray paint and paste in a backpack. I mean, can't lie, I had thought about it plenty but I don't have the guts to do anything like that. My conscience would eat me alive. I do plan on playing around with it on my own property in the future, though :)

Blizzards and such

Not sure how the weather is in your neck of the woods, but in Illinois we have been slammed with snow this week! And more is due tonight. I've tried to be a little open minded about all this cold weather and white stuff, I'm used to dark rainy days for months on end in Portland. I have to admit that I was a little enchanted during the first snowfall this year. But I lost interested before the first week of snow had passed. I'm counting down the days to warmer weather again. And I'm bummed that all my packages are being delayed due to blizzards.

I haven't taken any pictures here with the snow {shame on me!} but here is one I took in Oregon last month.

I'm working like crazy on some new projects. Coding an entirely new blog {there WILL be a giveaway!} and last night I finally made a facebook page for all of my crafty adventures. I'll post the new blog and giveaway on my facebook page when it's ready :)

Hello again Chi-Town

I'm back in Chicago again, after a nice 6 week visit to Oregon :) We had a LOT of fun, and I have a good 1000+ photos to edit in the very near future of all of the adventures. I had a lot of fun, though. Worked at the paper store a bit, did some fun photoshoots, and made pretty new stuffs that I want to share soon!

Random thoughts

Hello friends. I have some random thoughts and confessions for you today.

1. I like to wear rhinestones around my eyes. Usually not as many as in this photo, but sometimes it does happen ;)

2. I cut my hair a lot shorter than this photo today. It's even officially shorter than Boy's now. My stylist tells me the sides and back are a #5 on the electric clipper thing-a-ma-bob. If you understand the length just from that number, I give you props. All I know is that when I run my fingers through it, it doesn't really stick out more than that.

3. I go through more cream cheese in a month than I think any family really does in an entire year. I mix it in salsa and chili, put it in enchiladas, and of course a ton on my bagels. I discovered the most amazing cream cheese frosting a couple weeks ago {though I alter it a little bit - about half the sugar and add a teaspoon of lemon juice}. And Boy makes a super easy, fantastic cheesecake for me. I about die when he makes strawberry cheesecake.

Ahhh, shoes

I've been needing new shoes for office wear, and I finally got some that I loooove♥

I'm obviously in love with gray right now! I also bought some new office wear clothing, including the most darling pencil skirt.

And Bath & Body Works was having their huge semi-annual sale, so I decided to stop in since I haven't been in about 2 years. Guess what I discovered? Best scent ever:

I pretty much smell like candy apples 24/7 now. Mmmm!

I shot some photos in manual mode today, for the first time everrrr. It was scary and exciting. I'll post them when I download them from my card. They're just product shots for Uptown Vintage but we had a suuuper dark day today and I had to figure out how to continue with the planned photoshoot, so I grabbed the tripod and played with all of the settings. It was fun! Hope they look as good on screen as they did on the camera's display♥

Gotta work on more business goals and ideas before bed! And probably watch a movie. I'm trying to keep myself from reading the new books I bought for my trip back to Chicago next Friday {The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo & The Girl Who Played With Fire}, but it's hard!! So if I catch up on movies and shows instead, I should be fine :)

Birdie love~

Back as promised! Whew, today was a crazy but great day!! Listened to lots of Jack Johnson and took/edited almost 200 photos - most were product photos for Uptown Avenue and Uptown Vintage and some were photos for my blog :)

Anyway, I have some crafty stuff to show you guys tonight before I finally go to bed♥

First, these glitter birds I made!

I made them at my job at the paper store as an example and loved them way too much, so I have to buy some white clay to replace what I used there and make some others to put on display at the store♥

I was planning on mailing them, but I keep forgetting to go out and buy postage stamps! Silly me. I might make more to sell, but we'll see :)

Yep, I suck at coming up with titles :)
I originally recorded an almost 9 minute video to post here because I was too tired to take pictures of everything I wanted to share, but when I went to review it noticed that there is absolutely no sound. Not exactly sure why, but hopefully I'll get it fixed soon. Anyway, I know it's been a while, I've been working a lot lately but today was my last shift during my temporary holiday time back at the paper store. I have quite a bit to share with you tomorrow, when there's enough light to take pictures of everything I've been working on. In the meantime, though, I've been playing with the new f/1.8 50mm lens:

For all of my readers who are into photography, or do it professionally... do you know of great {free} online resources to learn more? I want to learn everything I can about the shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc because almost every single one of my photos are taken on the flash off setting near a window for natural lighting. And in Oregon, sometimes {okay, okay, a lot of times!} it is hard to get enough light.

More tomorrow, I mostly promise.

Holiday Love

Hope you are having a lovely holiday season!!
We celebrated Christmas yesterday, with a bit of a twist. Since I wasn't in Oregon for Thanksgiving we had a traditional Thanksgiving meal for our Christmas dinner. Mmmmm, stuffing and crescent rolls!

I spent Christmas my very favorite way: eating and napping, with a little bit of movie watching and lots of hanging out with the family.

Wanted to share some photos from the vintage hat shoot last week. Be warned though, even though 2 of them are vintage veils I am not engaged or planning to get married any time soon!!

Oooh yeah, forgot to mention that I chopped even more hair off a little over a week ago. It was getting way too long, almost helmet status. Yuck. Anyway, I like this cut the best so far, and the stylist was kind enough to make it easy for anyone else to cut it consistently with what she did {the last 2 that cut my hair totally destroyed it, had to let it grow pretty long - thus the helmet - before it could be salvaged. Needless to say, I wore a hat every single day}.

I think I'll start working on my goals for 2011 binder tonight!

Lil Gypsy

Sooooo, since I've been back in Oregon I've done a bit of vintage hunting {because who doesn't love that?!}. It all started when I met for coffee with my dear friends Sarah and Ashley.

We had a lovely time at Broadway Coffeehouse, it was so nice to catch up with them in a chill environment!! Afterward, Ash suggests going across the street to Lil Gypsy, a funky vintage store that I'd seen hundreds of times but never been inside {shame on me, I know}. Let me just say that I'd already heard amazing things about the place, that the owner is known for creating the coolest costumes from everything in her shop. I swear to you when we opened the door I almost died of happiness. So much vintage awesomeness in every nook and cranny of the place.

Back story!! When I was a little girl my mom used to take me with her to department stores to shop. I looooved going because I would "treasure hunt" while she was looking at the clothes. I would literally keep my eyes to the ground searching for buttons, sequins, and any other treasure that had fallen off of the clothes or little objects that previous customers had dropped and left behind. When we would get home, I'd put all the sequins and buttons into a container with the rest, and be quite happy with myself. Some of my favorite things to find were the plastic sizing rings that went on hangers. Employees would even give me extras when they saw me hunting for them under the clothing racks.

Ok, back to Lil Gypsy. This entire store was like a giant treasure hunt, definitely why I love it so much. There is not an empty spot on the wall or on the racks. Bins of gloves, bowties, and pretty jewelry - I could happily sit there for hours "oooh"ing and "aaaah"ing over the treasures to be found. Racks and racks of vintage clothing. And more hats on the ceiling than I've ever seen in one place!

Didn't have my camera that day, but went back a few days later to get pics of the place. Sam, the shop owner, was super sweet for letting me have free roam with my camera!

Not even close to all of the pics that I took, but these were some of my favorites! I'll probably share more later, and I still have to show pics from an antique mall that we hit up downtown :)

On the hunt

Yesterday was a busy, full, fun, and tiring day! My family went Christmas tree hunting at Palmer's Tree Farm in town. Usually I sit that activity out, but they saved the activity especially for me and I was kind of looking forward for the photo opportunity anyway.

It was a cuuuuute little local place, family owned. I would totally go back there for an actual portrait shoot someday.

This was my favorite tree, the smell was strong and the needles are cute and rounded off at the tip.
We wound up cutting our own tree {my little brother actually did it, I can't believe how tall and strong he's getting!} - they give you hand saws and tree dolly's and point you to the places in the field where you will find your tree species of choice. They had hot chocolate and coffee there too, but I didn't have any.

And it was a gorgeous day, close to 60. I wound up walking around in a short sleeve tee the whole time. It was way below freezing when I left Illinois so it was a nice change ♥

Oregonian

I made it to Oregon! The weather is sooooo warm compared to Illinois, it's perfect! I owe my blog a really big post of everything in my life, but I'm still a little worn out from the flight and activities today {getting a Christmas tree with the family and decorating!} so I'm just going to post a couple of pictures I took from the plane.

I love taking photos of clouds from above just as much as I love taking photos of flowers from below ♥
I can't think of a more peaceful landscape. These were taken on the first flight, between Chicago and Kansas City, which lasted an hour and a half. I bought a book for the day as well, Dear John by Nicholas Sparks. It's the first book of his that I've read, I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately though, it only lasted the first flight. So my 1 hour layover and 4 hour flight from KC to PDX were spent listening to Tegan and Sara on repeat {surprise, surprise!!}, reading Game Informer magazine, and staring out of the window. Plus there was a sweet little boy who was probably between 2 and 3 in the seat in front of me who kept showing me his book. I tried keeping him occupied the whole time he was awake because his parents were terribly cranky at him, and it made my heart sad. We'd point to the animals and make the sounds that they make and he'd crack up. I love how easily entertained kids are. He didn't care that we made an elephant sound 50 times over, he laughed like it was the first time every time.

Oookay, it's 4:30am {6:30 my normal time!!} and I really need to go to bed.

Vintage Finds

Finally a sunny day!! I've been dying to take pictures of some awesome vintage finds that me and Boy got a while back. I love that he goes with me looking for vintage treasures, even if it's just to laugh at me when I find something amazing and squeal. He says I squeak, but it's more of a "Eeeeeee, look!!!!".

Just wanted to show a peek of what I've been working on today!
I finished a blue lampwork bead cameo necklace that I started ages ago :)

I made one a several years ago when we lived in Missouri that was multi-colored beads, which I want to make again. This blue one will be put up for sale at DareDream in the next few days - just gotta wait for a brighter day so I can take better pictures :) Shadows drive me NUTS.

We got a light dusting of snow today. Brrr! I've been with my heating pad and space heater all day, watching Supernatural while I'm working on my projects :) I sketched out a new painting, but have to wait for Boy to get home because my paints are up way too high for me to reach.

Macro Monday

I've been wanting to play with macros more lately. Here are a few of pretty natural and dyed feathers from the feather headbands I made {available at Uptown Avenue!}

I'm thinking of making Macro Monday a regular feature here on the blog, because I ♥ macros that much.

I wish I had gotten some pretty shots of Thanksgiving food, but I was way too busy stuffing my face with amazing food that Boy's sister made. And I *really* need to get her recipe for an amazing almond cream pie that she made. It was so good that I ate my slice and half of Boy's!! Plus a cute mini peanut butter cup pie. After we all stuffed our faces, we watched Killers and chilled.

Boy and his brother wrestled {breaking picture frames in the process} for a while. I get all sorts of nervous that he's going to get hurt when he does that, so I watch and get tense and cover my eyes when it gets too bad. He didn't break bones, but his body was super sore the next day. I really don't understand boys :)

I survived a migraine today, and I'm SO happy to have it over with {finally}. I've never had one this bad, I was out of commission the entire day. Ugh.

Recipes s'il vous plait

So I've been collecting recipes this last week. Just ones that I've seen around on blogs, haven't gone searching for them {yet}. And I noticed a trend, which will make total sense to anyone who knows me in person. I've saved a total of 12 recipes so far.... 4 of which are for cupcakes, 2 of which are for cookies, 2 for frosting, and the other 4 are misc other sweets {cinnimon rolls, monkey bread, etc}. It's true, I have the biggest sweet tooth of all time. In fact, I ate powdered donuts for dinner last night. And the first thing I buy in each new apartment/house is a can of frosting {A promise I made to myself as a kid, that I would ALWAYS buy frosting for my house before I bought any "real" food}.

Anyway, a little link love for ya:

1. Monkey bread ::: I've made this recipe. Twice. It's so EASY and sooooo good. It has never lasted more than 24 hours. Actually, it's probably never lasted more than 2.

2. Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls ::: I haven't made these yet. My friend Ash sent me the link after she made them. I'm not a big pumpkin fan, but Boy is. So who knows, if I feel generous someday I'll make some for him :)

3. Vegan Mini Donuts! ::: Vegan recipes make my heart happy. Being from the Portland OR area, I've had lots and lots of vegan friendly food. Most of it is delicious. But I like cream cheese and cheddar cheese too much to commit to the vegan lifestyle. Just yet anyway. Anyway, Kaylah of The Dainty Squid has lots of yummy recipes on her blog, and she makes them all so colorful and pretty!

I'm adamant on having a nice big kitchen in my next place, so I'm building my recipe collection in the meantime. I've never been much on cooking {but always HUGE on baking}, so it's about time I learn! I am 24, after all. So will you do me a biiiiiig favor?

The other night Boy took me out shopping in a nearby town. While we were driving there was the most gorgeous sunset! Of course, my little P&S didn't *quite* do it justice, but I like the pictures anyway ♥

While we were out, we went back to Panera Bread {my favorite when we lived in Missouri - haven't had it since} and I got my usual - cinammon crunch bagel with hazelnut cream cheese. Mmmmm. I'm a bagel fiend if you didn't already know.

And I got this super comfy, warm hoodie. It has that super soft, fake sherpa fleece stuff inside. I know, I'm great at descriptives :) It's the only way I know how to describe it though. Mine is black on the inside, I don't buy anything white because I'm famous for spilling anything and everything on me when I eat/drink.

It replaces my oversized boy plaid hoodie that I've been wearing!

Also, I just snagged Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert at the library. Can't wait to read it. I am a HUGE fan of Eat, Pray, Love. I really do need to buy myself a copy. And watch the movie. If you haven't read EPL, I highly recommend it!

Vintage Polaroid Love

Just wanted to share some photos of one of my favorite things.... vintage Polaroids!

My mom used to work in insurance, and we would have to go take pictures of houses some weekends for the client's insurance files. This was waaayyy before digital cameras came out, so we used Polaroids to instantly add the photos to their files. I love love loved it. I used to take pictures with the Polaroid whenever I could. Pictures of my old stuffed animals collection, my first dog, all of my board games... you get the idea. Anyway, I have no idea what happened to all of my silly Polaroids, but I still adore vintage Polaroid cameras.

Costume Love

I never dress up for Halloween for some reason. I haven't since I was in elementary school. But Boy and I were invited to a costume party and we decided that we would actually do it this year. Boy hasn't dressed up for Halloween since I've known him (7 years), so we had to get costumes. I didn't really want to go all out, so I bought a cowboy hat. Boy, though, went all out. I think he looks great. Fake piercings and everything.

I got to put eyeliner on my guy, and I loved it :)
I had a hangover for 2 days straight, though, and I hated that part.

Sneaker Love

I'll admit that, although I think quite often about pretty dresses, I usually dress "comfy casual". I call it practical, but I know that "practical" is subjective. I'm a cardigan&jeans or hoodie&jeans kind of girl on most days. Which means I usually stick to regular ol' sneakers. Actually, I've had the same black sneakers for about 3 years now that I wear almost every single day.

You can tell from the scuff marks around the front that I'm a lot clumsier with my left foot ;)
These are from Skechers, and I love them because you don't have to tie them, just slip your feet in and go! And they're the most comfortable shoes I've had. But although I only have this pair of sneakers, it doesn't stop me from drooling over other ones. I love crazy bright colored sneakers the most.

And look at all these pretty sneakers!!! The front pair are Adidas as well.

I think I might like to have a sneaker collection in the future. They're so pretty pretty.

And then there's this pair of red Onitsuka Tiger Asics, that I've loved for about 5 or 6 years now. Why I haven't bought a pair yet, I'm not sure. But I probably will eventually.

Confessions

1. Sometimes I psych myself out of blogging. Not sure why, but I make myself nervous about posting ANYTHING. It's not that I don't think about it every day, because I do, but I wonder how much of my thoughts are really important enough to post. I do still post pretty regularly on Twitter though. Weird, right?

2. I'm always cold. I have a little space heater that I use all the time, I have to have tons of blankets when I sleep, and whenever I'm working at home I am glued to my heating pad. It was probably the best $12 I've ever spent. And it's not uncommon to see me working with gloves on. Unfortunately Boy can't stand heat so he open the windows as soon as it starts getting cold out. But I can't ever feel it as long as I have the space heater pointing at me.

3. I have to try to curb my video game playing, because I can easily stay up until 4am playing Grand Theft Auto or any other game that I'm really into. I'm just as bad with web surfing, I tend to get carried away. I'm lucky that Boy loves video games too, we play together a lot {we have game console versions of typical board games like Monopoly and Scene It that we play often}.

4. I like to be hyper-organized, but when I don't have the resources or tools to have everything super organized then I get overwhelmed and frustrated and just let it sit in piles. I really prefer that everything be neat, clean, and visually appealing, though.

5. As I've mentioned before, I was an only child for most of my childhood, so I'm used to having a very calm, quiet environment. I get very stressed out by yelling or fighting going on around me. My last neighbors would scream at each other daily and I could hear it from every room in the house, I had to start listening to music 24/7 just to drown out their arguing.

6. I tend to mostly sit back and observe when I'm in large groups, but I'm much more comfortable in small groups. I'm trying to force myself to open up in big groups, especially since Boy has a huge family.

7. I'm a dreamer, a hopeless idealist. I always have been, and I always will be :)

Daily Dream in Colored Pencil

Last weekend we found some of our old colored pencils in the attic and brought them down, mostly because Boy has to color in body charts for his Anatomy class. So, for fun one night, I decided to doodle in the composition notebook I keep (I *always* have a composition notebook where I write down random thoughts and tidbits - like books I want to read or goals I have or my to-do list). And of course I had to try out the colored pencils again.

The result?

It was super fun, but my hand was KILLING me after the several hours it took to color it in :)
One of my goals is to draw/color more like this (Yep, I wrote the goal down in my trusty composition notebook).

Autumn Days at the Park

If you follow me on Twitter, you'll know that I've been spending a lot of time at a park the past few days. It's actually why I haven't blogged since Friday.

I found a gorgeous park here, with lots of trails and different areas. I'm the kind of girl who really needs lots of alone time, and sometimes it's a challenge for me to find the time or space to get it in when I live with other people. Don't get me wrong, I love Boy super tons and I love getting to see him every day and spend time with him, but I was an only child until I was 11 and I'm used to the alone time.

Anyway, back to this park. I found a lovely area that has the right amount of trees and grass and wooded area, it makes me feel like I'm back in Oregon♥. And not a lot of people use that space, so I get in all the alone time I want :)

One of the trees is already losing it's golden yellow leaves, it's so pretty!! I've sort of claimed a picnic table right next to it, so I get a lovely view:

Sounds weird, but this alone time was exactly what I was missing, was needing and couldn't figure out exactly what it was. Yesterday I was able to almost finish the book I've been reading PLUS I made goals {both personal and crafty} and a list of places I might like to work. It was really inspiring, I highly recommend some alone time in a park. If you aren't used to it, you might feel awkward at first, but I promise that you get used to it and it starts to be relaxing and peaceful. Once the squirrels have seen me sitting there for a while, they get brave and start gathering walnuts and acorns around me. And yesterday I watched a hawk hunting. Not sure what kind of animal he got, but he did fly off with a meal right before I left.

I'm trying to get as many days in as I can, before the weather gets too cold and the skies start dumping snow on us. Autumn is my favorite season!!

First, this signed Hattie Carnegie brooch:

Hattie Carnegie makes my heart happy. She came to America, from Austria, in 1904 when she was 18. Her last name was Kanengesier at the time, but was rumored to have asked someone while on the boat to America who the richest person in the US was {at the time Andrew Carnegie}. So she took Carnegie as her last name to start her new life. In 1909 she opened her first shop, Carnegie-Ladies Hatter. In 1916 she founded Hattie Carnegie, Inc and started manufacturing high-quality costume jewelry to complement her clothing line.

Hello internet world!

Monday, once again. I woke up to a nice, loud thunderstorm - which is my FAVORITE way to wake up. I hope you'll forgive my weekend break, I don't want to go into too much detail but someone close to Boy is in the ICU and we were there visiting. Please keep him and the rest of his family in your thoughts, it would mean a lot to all of us♥

It goes along perfectly with the collections challenge that my sweet blog friend Lindsay just had on her blog! I would post my collections, too, but I don't really have any anymore. I used to collect Beanie Babies, but stopped when they "retired" them in 2000. I also had a pretty sweet pin collection from the Albuquerque Balloon Fiestas, but I must have given them to my brothers or something. I have a stamp collection, but I left it in Oregon. So that pretty much leaves me collection-less. Unless you count my collection of 12x12 and specialty paper.

And speaking of collections, September 25th is Museum Day!! Tons of museums are offering free admission, click the link to find participating museums near you and to print the tickets.

Chocolate Heaven

Today Boy's sister made amazing homemade chocolates. I can't even begin to describe how awesome they were. White chocolate mint with cherry buttercream centers. Heaven, pure and simple. I tried to take little nibbles and just let them sit in my mouth so that I wouldn't eat them too fast - I think my taste buds got a little high from happiness.

My daily dream is to take LOTS more photos of the backs of flowers :)

They make me happy in my heart. I loved the detail on the back of this daisy that was at the Oregon Gardens.

Renegade Chicago ended yesterday, but unfortunately I wasn't able to attend this time. I had been looking forward to it for months, but was too sick to make it. Huge bummer. But I'm so thankful for the internet, because I can still shop my favorite vendors online and see photos of the best craft show of all time!

I did buy some awesome crafty stuff online last night, though, so I'm really hoping that it gets here by Friday and I can show you some new goodies that me and Boy are making for DareDream!! It's been kind of fun to help him with his Etsy shop now that I'm here. All I've done so far is take pictures of some of the jewelry he made and some that his sisters made. I'll start making jewelry again some day.

But in the meantime, I've opened my own vintage shop on Etsy, called Quirk Vintage!

It's all jewelry right now, but I have some great home decor goodies that will be going up soon. And a rocking vintage camera that comes with 35mm lomo film ;)

Also, last night I saw two centipedes within 15 minutes of each other while I was laying in bed reading 1984. I'm not happy about bugs coming in now that it's getting super cold at night. I've been trying to find some good DIY natural recipes to repel or kill bugs. Are there any that you use and swear by? Or some that you've heard of but haven't tried yet? I'd love to know! They super creep me out, I usually just use the ShopVac to suck them up when I see them but best believe these centipedes are too fast for me to go get the vacuum and have them still be there when I get back. And centipedes are the creepiest bugs EVER.

Daily Dream - Murphy Beds

Here's a daily dream that I've had for YEARS. I've seriously truly always wanted a... murphy bed!!! When I was little I always wanted to just fold my bed up into the wall so I wouldn't have to make it daily {ha!!}, but now I think they are just much more practical and functional. All that space that beds take up! Not to mention, I've really loved the inventive ways that people can live comfortably in smaller spaces {which translates to smaller heating and cooling needs, smaller bills, and smaller environmental impact - yay!}.

The front shelves on this unit just slide to the side and you lower the bed. I *love* that you don't lose storage space with newer options like this!!

I don't know what this one looks like when folded up, but I loved the color scheme and that there are wrap around shelves that tie it in with the rest of the space.

Aren't they amazing and beautiful? I've sketched dozens of different designs I would want when {if} the time comes for me to get a murphy bed. They are pretty expensive, so I'll create a DIY version someday rather than spend $3k. If you aren wanting one right now on the cheap, though, there's an IkeaHack out there called the Moddi Murphy Bed that supposedly only costs $275! You can make it in a twin size or full size option and it stands out from the wall 12".

They would be pretty sweet in an extra room that you wanted to use as a dual guest room.

I'm attempting to get back on a regular schedule with my blog since I've moved. I've basically been focusing on spending time with Boy again and looking for a full time office job {if anyone knows of anything available in Chicago or has hookups here, please let me know!}.

So to get back in the groove, I'm creating something called the Daily Dream. Everyday {hopefully!} I'll post my Daily Dream. Whether it's an actual item that I looove or a goal of mine, etc. What can I say, I'm a dreamer!

Today we spent the day with some of Boy's family. The kids {meaning Boy and then all the actual kids} played outside with NERF swords most of the afternoon while I filmed and took a couple pictures. It inspired today's Daily Dream:
Someday, I want....
A yard!

Just some grass to play on would be nice - no need for a garden or lots of flowers or bushes or anything. Some soft grass for water balloon fights or BBQs would be great.

Birthday Surprise - Tegan and Sara!

The other day Boy invited me to the city to hang out with him and his brother for a while. Of course I said yes, I love any chance to go to Chicago to hang out. So we drove to the downtown area by the lake to wait for his brother. All of a sudden we're caught up in some bad traffic. I was looking out the window and taking pictures the entire drive, so I didn't really notice.

But then Boy says "Oh here, you'll need these. Happy Birthday!" and hands me something. I look and it's two tickets to Tegan and Sara!!! His whole story about going to see his brother was good, but totally untrue :)

I started getting super excited, because I had been trying to forget about the fact that they were going to be playing in Chicago and I wasn't going to get to see them. We parked and walked by the marina to Northerly Island to an outdoor venue for the Honda Civic Tour. We bought some hot dogs and beer and got as close as we could without pushing in front of people.

This was before T&S played, probably when Kadawatha was playing {they were GOOD}. We didn't have this much room by the time T&S came on set.

And my favorite part.....

Eeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Yeah, I pretty much love Boy super much, this was the best birthday surprise!!

Oregon Gardens

Saturday we went to the Oregon Gardens, it was gorgeous!! Last time we went was about 5 years ago when they first opened, and there were baby plants here but mostly dirt {which it totally NOT typical in the PacNW!} so I hated it. But this time it was all grown in and in bloom. So pretty.

Of course I took pictures :)

This one is my favorite. I think I'll get it blown up and framed.

I get a few days off finally, so today is a day to do whatever the heck I want to do. I love those days the most.

Just wanted to share a project I did this week. After a whole lot of deciding on the perfect central hub website name, I finally registered and created LEXoxo!

And in celebration of my new website, I've decided to give my blog a little makeover {um, I totally just wrote makeout and then had to change it!}.

Lingerie Card DIY

Here's a fun card if you are going to a lingerie bridal shower, are making lingerie shower invitations, or want to give a sexy card to your partner.

It's easy peasy, there's a template available from the Paper Zone!

I added extra ribbon detail, all you have to do is weave thread through some satin ribbon and scrunch the ribbon down to create the ruffle. Then knot the thread so it stays and use super strong glue dots to adhere the ruffle to the cardstock!

I know a bunch of us are having to deal with long distance love for a while, so I decided to show you a little book I made about missing Boy {something you can totally mail to your guy to show him how much you miss him!}

A while back I asked on Twitter what you missed most about your guy, and I used the most popular answers in a little freebie download for this project :)

First I started by making a mini book out of some scrapbook paper that I had quite a few sheets of. I wanted the whole thing to match, but it's super cute if you mix it up, too!

Next I printed off the sheet I made with all the little things I miss about Boy {and the things you said you miss about your men, too!}. You can download the file I created here if you want to save some time and not worry about putting one together. It's nothing fancy, I just filled in the letters of a font that I love with black so that it can go with anything.

Then put it all together however you like!

I'm using the right side of my book for pictures and embellishments, and the left side I'll use for journaling about it and writing letters to him.

We went to a wax museum and he stood next to one of the figures to see if anyone would notice.... they didn't.

I keep ALL of our movie ticket stubs. This isn't all of them, just a random selection of some. The receipt on the bottom right corner for Ray... that was the first time we went out :)

The nice thing about this book is that it's not too big to mail, and the size makes it easy for your guy to keep safely with his other things.

DIY Mini Book

Working on a special project the other day, I decided I wanted to try to make a mini book not like the typical binder ring books. This is what I came up with, hope you enjoy!

You'll need:
Paper for the pages. I used full sheets of cardstock because I wanted thick pages.
Cardstock for the outer "binding"
Double sided tape
Scoring tool or bone folder {If you don't have either, you can totally use a ruler or back of your thumbnail works too)

You don't need a huge tape gun like I have, Tombow adhesive runners and Scotch Double Sided tape works just as well. I make a LOT of cards and wedding invitations so it was worth it for me to invest in something heavy duty.

First, start by deciding how big you want your book to be. If you want it to be 2x2 you'll need to make one side twice as wide so you'll cut it 2x4. I want mine to be the size of a half sheet of paper {5.5 x 8.5} so I don't need to cut my paper down.
Then score all of your interior pages in half. The black cardstock is what I'm using for my outer binding, so I'll leave it alone for now.

After you're done, lay your pages out in the order that you want them. I want mine in rainbow order, so I'm going to start with my red paper. Close it so the two edges are on the left and the fold is on the right, and apply the adhesive to all the edges.

Perfect!
Now take your next page, folded the same direction {edges on the left, fold on the right} and line up the edges of the bottom of that piece to the top of the one you just applies adhesive to.

Once it's lined up well, lay it down onto the tape and press to make sure that it's adheres.

Close it so all the edges are on the left and the folds are on the right. Apply tape around the edges of the top piece {orange, in my case}, and repeat until you have adhered all of your folded paper together.

It should look something like this:

Set it aside. Now take the paper you want to be your "outer binding". I call it this, because it's pretty much only there to cover all your folded edges. Cut one of the sides to the height of your book {my example book is 8.5" tall so I used the 8.5" side of the paper}. Then decide how much you want the binding piece to wrap around the front and back and cut it to fit. My pages were approximately 1/2" thick and I wanted 1" of the binding to be on the front and back cover, so I cut my paper to 2 1/2".

Now we're going to score it. Since I wanted 1" to wrap on the front, I'll make my first score at the 1" mark.

Now apply tape to the smaller section that you just scored, line it up on the folded edge of your first page {red} and adhere it.

Next, flip the book to the other side. I pulled the outer piece around the creased it slightly where the blue piece was so that I knew it would fit tightly, then I scored a line along that crease for a sharp edge.
Apply tape, and adhere!

If you want your front and back pages to show, you're done!

I wanted my front and back cover to be white, so I measured and cut a piece of paper that started at the end of the black binding and reached to the edge of the book and just taped it on over the red and blue outer ends.

Ta-Da!

Make Something!

Another peek at my space.
This is right above my bed and in perfect view from where I'm sitting at my computer right now.

I put it there to inspire me to do more than just sit on the internet all day.

All I did was buy paper in the two colors, drew one letter per sheet, cut them out and stuck them to the wall using masking tape. Suuuuuuper easy. I've started hanging my art and inspiration underneath, using Rachel's clipboard inspiration wall idea. I've hung more art since these photos were taken, so I'll try to get more pictures of it soon.

The paper was .19 each, so this project cost a whopping $2.66. Next time I'm going to use cute patterned paper and put a quote up on the wall!

I've been playing with my new nail polish lately, because I looooove it.
Lately I've been using 3 colors: hot pink, lime green, and electric blue!

So much fun. Oh, and you can see the rhinestones I put on, too. I considered trying to get dermal piercings there, but I'll just stick to rhinestones because I doubt my piercer will want to work that close to my eye. Plus the rhinestones are only $2.30 for a 100 pack {they are the self adhesive kind - I've super glued rhinestones to my arms over henna before and it kind of stung so I won't use glue by my eye}.

Summer!

So it's finally starting to feel like summer in the NW. We have sunny days in the 70s and 80s and I'm just loving them when I do get a chance to go out and enjoy them. It's so wonderful to have all of my windows wide open to let the breeze in, even if I do have to take children's allergy medicine so I can breathe!

Missing him

I'm totally missing Boy.

He makes me sooo happy in my heart. Srsly, he knows exactly how to spoil me rotten. I remember when we lived in Missouri and he would bring me Gatorade and donuts to work {almost every day!} and he would stop by throughout the day to say hi and bring me little goodies. It was so nice living right across the street from where we worked so we could see each other whenever we wanted. I miss our Sundays. We had a ritual every single Sunday. We would walk to the little $1 movie theatre two blocks away and be the only ones in the entire theater watching, along with the man who owned the place. It was like our own private movie date every week, and it rocked. Then when the movie was over we would get burritos and Coldstone ice cream and take it home and catch up on our shows for the week {LOST, Smallville, Heroes, etc} while we spread out our picnic dinner on the bed. It was lovely.

Miss you, loveface.

Skatepark

When I was younger I wanted to learn how to skate. I played Tony Hawk all the time and thought about how cool I would be as a chick skater. Yeah, well, it never happened. I'm too scared of bone breaks and getting hurt I think. I definitely want to try it though. I finally got to the point where I can roll on the board and keep my balance, but ramps/hills/anything else are not in my immediate future.

By the way, I just finished reading A Lion Among Men {book 3 of the Wicked series}. I liked it, not as much as Wicked but definitely more than Son of a Witch. I'm hoping he releases more books about the other Wizard of Oz characters, but in the meantime I'm looking for a new books to start. Any suggestions?

Nailpolish in ROYGBIV

Bought a few new nail polish colors at Target the other day and when I got home and put them with the rest I realized that it made quite a beautiful rainbow family!!

I am missing a couple of my favorite colors in this shot, but wanted to share the roygbiv nailpolish goodness with you!

The pink, orange, and green are some of the new colors. They are super durable and were only two or three dollars each! I can't really justify spending $9+ for OPI, even though some of the colors are a-mazing.

This is what I'm currently wearing:

There aren't any chips and I've been wearing it for the past 3 days! Oh, and for the record, my family and Boy pretty much fainted when they saw me wearing pink. I haven't worn pink since I was 3 or 4. I'm trying to give it a chance. Really, I am. Whenever I look down at my nails I feel like I'm looking at someone else's hand because of the pink nails. But I like them, so they'll stay for the time being. I used to put fun stripes and designs in my nail polish, and these new ones dry really fast so maybe I'll do it again before long.

I'm a hat lover. I don't wear them often, though I should. Anyway, I was searching Etsy for some pretty hats and came across yellowfield7. It's GORGEOUS.

I ♥ Crafty Wonderland

Today I went to Crafty Wonderland. It was pretty much amazing. But I wasn't originally planning on going, so I a] didn't think to bring my camera, b] didn't have much cash on me. It was inspiring and gorgeous and wonderful. I've been to craft/art shows before. But nothing this great. It was like the best of Etsy, in person!! I really can't say enough good things about it.

Anyway, just wanted to share the few small things I did buy while I was there.

Excuse the photo. I took it in bad lighting, obviously, but was too excited to show you to wait until morning.

I forget the name of the first booth that we saw when we walked in, because I didn't see any business cards out. But I bought the sweet little bird button on the bottom {3rd from right} from that first booth. Do you know who it's from?

I think the bison is adorable, especially in plaid. He's from Wooly Bison. There were a lot of super cute coin purses in plaid and herringbone that caught my eye. ♥

And then of course, the other 5 are from Berkley Illustration. I was SO excited to see Berkley Illustration's booth. Actually, we had left the show and I was still a little sad that I hadn't bought anything from them, so I had to turn back around and used the last of my cash {besides the parking garage's cut, of course} to buy those 5 buttons. In love. I'll be buying many prints for my house some day. Plus, Ryan was friendly and funny and it makes me want to support his art that much more.

Not that I had an ounce of doubt before, but Crafty Wonderland just confirmed that much more how much I adore Portland. It's quirky and weird and artsy and accepting.

Mmmm I love smoothies sooooo much. Jamba Juice gets multiple visits per week from me!
My current fave is Aloha Pineapple but I have to try their brand new Five Fruit Frenzy today.

Aaaaand.... my favorite drink from Starbucks will be back soon!

The blended strawberry lemonade! It was discontinued a few years ago but they will still make it for you if you ask :) It's a summer only drink, since they only stock lemonade during the summer. I *think* they get it in May, but I'm not 100% sure.

I used to get it with a shot of the orange flavoring as well {I forget what it was called} but they discontinued THAT also! So now I just ask for extra strawberries, because I like my drinks super sweet.

I'm busy getting my new design website up, and I'm so excited to launch! I am going to be designing wedding and event invitations, business cards, promotional postcards, blog makeovers and other fun stuff. I'll announce it when I've launched, and offer a sweet giveaway at the same time. Yay for new ventures!

I really need to get my butt in gear organizing my craft space. Nothing motivates me more than seeing pretty pictures of other people's houses/work spaces :)
